The Green Sanctuary Committee is a group of UUs committed to helping the environment.  Whether it is the Children's RE building bluebird houses, or members meeting to clean up Haw Creek as part of the Adopt-a-River program, the UU Congregation of Columbus is becoming more and more a Green Sanctuary.  Join us and eat good organic vegetables while saving the earth!!

Denominational Affairs

About UUA Statements of Conscience:  Approved UUA Statements of Conscience become “official” UUA policy, to be supported by the Association and by individual Unitarian Universalists according to their consciences, priorities and means.  Furthermore UUA has a Washington Office for Advocacy which uses UUA Statements of Conscience in working with the U.S. Congress and other organizations to move our positions forward.

Our job: Each congregation has an opportunity to provide input to the fashioning of a Statement of Conscience.  Within the  congregation input can come from our Denominational Affairs Committee,  a Social Action/Justice Committee,  from a Post-Sermon discussion, or a Congregational meeting.

A current Statement of Conscience now awaiting comment from us is:

"Peacemaking"
Issue: Should the Unitarian Universalist Association reject the use of any and all kinds of violence and war to resolve disputes between peoples and nations and adopt a principle of seeking just peace through nonviolent means?

Please forward your comments on these pending Social Action issues to Lisette Miller
for input to the UU Commission on Social Witness

UUA's Action Guide

2007 General Assembly Statements/Resolutions

The June 2007 General Assembly in Portland, OR marked the 30th anniversary of the "Women and Religion" Resolution, which recognized continuing gender inequity and committed the UUA to recognizing and addressing the issues that affect full equality for women. This GA also marked the 10th anniversary of the "Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities" resolution, and the 10th anniversary of the "Toward an Anti-Racist Unitarian Universalist Association" resolution. Like the one 30 years ago, both of these resolutions recognize the many ways in which our communities continue to perpetuate privilege and inequity, and calls for us to respond.

For 2008,our six Actions of Immediate Witness continue our affirmation of the inherent worth and dignity of every person, and the expansion of our explicit recognition of oppressed peoples into our communal embrace. In particular, this year marks the first time that the delegates of General Assembly have explicitly recognized transgender persons as in need of protection from discrimination.

In addition to the Actions of Immediate Witness, the delegates at GA passed the 2007 Statement of Conscience, "Moral Values for a Pluralistic Society."
